Why visit Avalanche
Avalanche is one of the quietest corners near Ooty: shola forest, quiet lakes and valley views. Locals say the name comes from a large landslide here in the 1800s.
It is reserve forest, managed by the Forest Department. That keeps it wild, and it keeps it quiet.
Getting there
About 28 km from Ooty, past Emerald Lake. The last stretch is narrow and winding, and the final part to the lake is on foot through pine forest.
Seasons in Avalanche
- Oct – May: cool and green, with clear views on most days.
- Jun – Sep: monsoon. The Forest Department may close the area during heavy spells.
