Plan at least Day 1 before you arrive
After an overnight journey, a bus stand is the hardest place to plan a day. With Day 1 sorted:
- Your driver is waiting for you by name. No searching, no haggling.
- Your day fits your arrival: a quick wash and breakfast, then go.
- One clear price, agreed before you travel.
- Your driver knows your whole plan, not just the next stop.
Not sure about the rest? Book just Day 1, and decide the other days once you're here.
Most stays check in after 12 noon. Ask yours for an early check-in, or at least a place to freshen up; if not, your driver takes you for a quick wash and breakfast first. Your bags can stay in the car all day.
Before you enter the Nilgiris
- No single-use plastic water bottles (the usual 1-litre ones): there are heavy fines. The check posts have bins to throw plastics away, but it's better not to carry them. Carry a 5-litre can instead.
- No liquor from outside the Nilgiris, from another state or another district: vehicles are checked at the check posts and bottles are taken away.
- E-pass for every vehicle not registered in the Nilgiris (not TN43), including a cab hired from outside. Our cars are local, so you don't need one when you travel with us.
Driving to Ooty yourself
- Get the Nilgiris e-pass before you travel, at the official site epass.tnega.org. The rules and daily limits change from time to time, so check the official site before you travel.
- From Bangalore or Mysore: Bandipur → the forest check post → into Tamil Nadu → Theppakadu junction. Don't turn left at Theppakadu for Masinagudi and the 36 hairpin bends: that road is closed to vehicles not registered in the Nilgiris, and you'll be stopped after Masinagudi and sent back. Take the Gudalur road.
- Leaving for Bangalore or Mysore: the same. Cars from outside can't go down via Masinagudi; the Gudalur road adds about 1.5 hours, so plan your time.
- Night closure: the Bandipur forest road is closed to traffic at night (about 9 PM to 6 AM; check locally). Plan to pass the check post well before it closes.
From the moment you reach, it's on us.
