Why visit Ooty
Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is the main town of the Nilgiris, set at about 2,240 m. The British built it up as a summer retreat from the 1820s, and much of what visitors enjoy today comes from that time: the lake, the Botanical Garden, the old churches and the mountain railway.
It is also the best base in the hills. Coonoor, Pykara, Avalanche, Kotagiri and Mudumalai are all an easy day out, and you come back to a cool evening every night of the year.
Getting there
Coimbatore airport and railway station are the nearest major arrivals, about 86 km and 3 hours away. The road climbs from Mettupalayam through the Coonoor ghat. You can also come up on the toy train from Mettupalayam, or from Mysore and Bangalore through Mudumalai. Ola and Uber don't operate in Ooty, so plan your rides ahead.
